At the beginning of August, St Mawes sailing club held its annual Junior Race week. The event attracts young sailors from across the country and this year 92 young sailors in 60 boats took part in the five days of racing. There were two races held every morning for each of the five fleets.
The fleets consisted of 12 Fevas, 10 Handicap dinghies, 18 double handed Picos, 8 racing Optimists and12 starter Optimists. Charlie from the 3rd Year took part, winning the single-handed handicap class and coming first in all 9 races in the Laser category.
His mother said: “Charlie’s achievements are all thanks to the opportunity that Truro School has offered him. When he joined in the 1st Year he was new to sailing. The Wednesday Afternoon Activity offered by the school has given Charlie the opportunity to develop a skill and passion for sailing. Bob Warren is a great inspiration and has helped and encouraged Charlie enormously.”
Two of our Prep School sailors also took part in this prestigious and well-established competition; Max B sailed in the Handicap dinghies and came 3rd and Max F helmed in the double handed Picos, coming 4th place overall, but gaining a special commendation for coming 1st out of the 14 Picos with non-race sails.
