Sports Scholarships

Sports Scholarships at Truro School in Cornwall, UK

The School is looking for candidates of exceptional sporting and leadership ability who will be expected to make an outstanding contribution to sport at the school.

Sport Scholarships are awarded to candidates entering Truro School at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships awarded at 11+ will usually be worth 5 – 10% of the fees and will be reviewed at 13+ and 16+. At the discretion of the Headmaster, a select number of high value 16+ scholarships may be awarded to students of  exceptional talent. Any help thereafter is given in the form of a means-tested bursary.

All external candidates for a Sport Scholarship are required to register with the school before an application is made. The Director of Sport is always pleased to talk to prospective parents concerning any aspect of Sport Scholarships.

Truro School enjoys an outstanding reputation for competing in a wide range of sports at the very highest levels.

In addition to the outstanding coaching and sporting facilities provided by Truro School, successful candidates will be supported in their athletic development, including guidance on strength and conditioning programmes and lifestyle management. Performance and progress will be reviewed with the Director of Sport.

All Sports Scholars are expected to:

  • Play a leading role in the sporting life of Truro School
  • Be leaders, excellent role models and ambassadors within the school
  • Demonstrate high levels of commitment and motivation to training and competition
  • Train and play with school teams during periods of academic study leave and after finishing public examinations (when considered appropriate by the Director of Sport)
  • Participate in all House sporting events when selected

Retention of the award will be dependent on consistently excellent effort and performance levels, exemplary conduct during training and competition, and evidence of good contribution to team spirit.

The Application Process

Scholarship assessment is not based solely on sporting ability, but also on whether the candidate demonstrates appropriate character, physical endeavour, resilience, coachability and initiative.

Standard required for 11+ and 13+:

Whilst excellence in one sport will be recognised and is valued by the school, pupils with the ability and willingness to contribute in each of the three terms are more likely to succeed in their scholarship application than those who specialise in one sport to the exclusion of others.  Candidates are assessed on merit and should have the potential to become at least county standard in their preferred sport(s) during their time at Truro School.

Standard required for 16+:

Candidates are assessed on merit and should be of at least county standard in their preferred sport(s). If considered to be of school team standard in other sports, a willingness to get involved will certainly be expected.  According to the level of performance of individuals in their outstanding sport (county, regional, international) a contribution to the other major sporting activities of the school will be discussed on an individual basis with the Director of Sport.

Candidates should provide references from relevant coaches and/or PE teachers giving an accurate assessment of sporting performance and potential in support of their application.  These should be sent to the Director of Admissions with the application form. Students must then attend a Sport Scholarship Assessment Day.

Assessment Days:

Candidates should bring both indoor and outdoor sportswear and equipment appropriate for the activities, although we will provide equipment for those who require it.
