On 12 May, 13 Truro Prep fencers travelled to Millfield Prep School in Somerset for the annual IAPS Fencing Championships. With over 400 fencers competing over the weekend across 14 events, this is one of the largest youth competitions in the country. The fencers were accompanied by Truro Fencing Club coach Nikolay Dinev.
Truro Prep fencers competed in the under 11 sabre categories. Our best result came from Nick in the boys’ competition. Nick fenced brilliantly all day, beating fencers from all over the country. He won all of his direct elimination bouts to make the final. In the final, Nick fenced Damon Passmore from St Columba’s College. Nick carried on his dominance winning the fight with a convincing score of 10-6, and guaranteed his gold medal.
Jonathan and Richard also produced excellent results by both making the last eight of the competition. A special mention must go to Richard as this was his first fencing competition.
In the girls’ competition, Eva produced the best result and took home the bronze medal. She fenced strongly all day unfortunately missing out in the semi-final. This was an excellent result for Eva in her first fencing competition.
