Headmaster’s Blog – Monday 13 January 2014

Well done to our football players who drew 2-2 with Mount Hawke on Thursday. It is particularly pleasing to hear what a good spirited game this was, with great sportsmanship demonstrated by both teams and a good atmosphere on the field in general.

There were reports last week quoting the Head of a school in East London talking about the over enthusiastic behaviour of some parents on the touchline of matches. My previous school was just down the road from his school and we played regular fixtures against them; it was certainly true then (more than 10 years ago now) that there was a small minority of parents from both schools who were less than well-behaved in their “encouragement” from the side-lines. I am pleased to be able to say that Cornwall is different and better in this regard; it is also good to hear reports of how well our pupils behave even when playing for local clubs and not the school; that they are recognised as pupils of the school for how well they take part is to be commended.

Another exciting development is the introduction of an After-School Sports Club for Year 2 pupils on Wednesdays from 3.45pm to 4.30pm, to be run by our Year 5 & 6 Sports Leaders. This initiative by Mrs Barnett has been really popular with the older pupils and could lead to them gaining a youth sports leadership award. I have no doubt that our younger pupils in Year 2 will really enjoy the club as well; their first after-school club and a good introduction to the opportunities that will be available to them when they join Year 3 next year.

Good luck to our Science Quiz team as they head off to Millfield on Thursday for the regional round of this national competition.

And finally, a reminder that we have Informal Guided Tours for prospective parents on most Wednesday mornings at 11am. No appointments are necessary, so if you have any friends who might be considering sending their children here, please let them know about these tours – details are on the website. Also, if you have a child in Year 2 and would like to have a walk around the areas of the school used by the older pupils, please don’t hesitate to contact me to arrange a time.
