On Saturday, Harris, Alexander, Benjy, Isaac and Jacob competed for Cornwall against 44 county cross country teams from across England, Wales and Scotland in the National Inter-Counties Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.
The weather was perfect for running on this ‘proper’ cross country course which incorporated a nice mix of hills, flatter sections, mud and moorland grass.
Isaac and Jacob were first up in the Under 13 Boys race (3km). Both raced very well with Isaac being the fourth scoring runner for Cornwall crossing the line in 209th place (out of 297 finishers).
Harris and Benjy were next, competing in the Under 15 Boys event (4.75km). Harris was one of the favourites and had a terrific race. Keeping up with the leaders, he and the eventual winner made a break for the finish with 1 km to go. Harris could not quite stay with him over the last few hundred metres but managed a comfortable 2nd place in this National Final. This race also doubled up as the final of the British Athletics Cross Challenge series and by coming second in the race Harris scooped second prize for the series. A superb achievement.
Benjy also had a fantastic race, breaking into the National top 100 for the first time (96th out of 294 runners) even though he is still a ‘year young’ in this age group. As third scoring runner for his team, he and Harris helped Cornwall to their highest team position of the day (12th).
Finally, Alexander competed in the Under 17s race (6.1km). Still getting back to form after illness and being a ‘year young’, he managed a very creditable 162nd (out of 263 runners).
A great set of results from all the School’s runners before they compete in the National Schools Cross Country Championships next weekend in Norwich.
