From Ground to the Table: Learning About Food

Throughout their time at school, children at Truro Prep have the opportunity to learn all about where food comes from.

They begin by exploring the history and origins in their Food and Plants lessons, which also include looking at the fascinating fungi and wonderful wildlife in the School grounds.

The children then go on to plant seeds and grow, tend and water their own vegetables and herbs in the raised beds by the tennis courts. They also discover how to make compost and soon they will be using the new poly-tunnel too.

Once they have experienced growing their food, pupils move on to preparation and cooking. In Year 3 and 4 they make simple meals such as healthy pizzas and pastries, and by Year 5 they are tackling Cornish pasties. In this year they also plan and prepare their own soups or healthy pot noodles, which they cook on outdoor stoves at Stithians Reservoir on their Kayak Activity Day.

Years 3, 4 and 5 also very much enjoy making and decorating Christmas muffins! In Year 6, all they have learned comes together as they plan, prepare, cook and eat a full main course dish or two of their choice, as part of their Diploma.
