Fencing Summary – Weekend of 19 and 20 October

Last weekend, a number of our fencers were scattered over the country and across Europe, competing at national and international level. The foilists and epeeists were in Gateshead for the GB under 20 circuit. Yvonne Chart finished 28th in the women’s foil and Charles Dean finished 16th in the men’s epee. Both were fencing several years below the age category and these two solid placings will hold them in good stead in terms of ranking points and experience.

A 12-person GB U17 men’s sabre team comprised three Truro School fencers; William Deary, Josh Maxwell and Jamie Craze, for the latest of the U17 European Circuit events in Meylan, France. Jamie Craze put in a solid performance in the tough 131-man field finishing 68th. Josh Maxwell made a personal best finishing in 8th but William Deary took the honours of the day by beating all in front of him to take Gold. This is by far the biggest win of Will’s fencing career to date and follows on from his victory in Monéteau, as an U15 team three years ago. Off the back of these results, Will has jumped to a 2nd place ranking in all of Europe out of 461 fencers, and Josh is now in 23rd position.

In the women’s event, there were 118 fencers and this 12-person GB U17 team was also made up of three Truro School fencers. Caitlin Maxwell finished 22nd, Maria Chart came 28th and Millie Smith came 80th. Both Caitlin and Maria have now secured the minimum requirement to be considered for selection for the GB U17 World Championship team, which bodes well for the rest of the season. Caitlin is now ranked 50th in Europe at U17 level and 4th in her year out of almost 400 ranked fencers.

The Sunday saw the team events take place and the GB team was made up of three fencers for the men’s and women’s events. Truro School pupils dominated the line-up for the GB teams, with Will and Josh both in GB’s first team and Caitlin and Maria in the women’s GB first team. The men followed on from the previous day’s success by taking a bronze and the women claimed silver.
