At the Under 20 Sabre World Cup in Dormagen, Germany, Truro School’s Caitlin Maxwell was placed 6th out of 147 fencers from 22 nations, including all the top women’s sabre nations (Italy, Russia, France, Hungary, USA, Ukraine, Poland, Japan, Germany).
Most of the world’s top Under 20s were competing, and she beat Betegon (Spain) in the Last 64, Selecsenyi (Hungary) in the Last 32 and Kochetova (Russia) in the Last 16 before losing out 15-9 to Palczynska (Poland) in the quarter finals.
This is an outstanding achievement by Caitlin who was the youngest fencer in the top 8 by 2 years, and whilst still only 15 years old she was competing in only her 3rd Under 20 world cup. Caitlin will now be ranked Number 1 in Britain at Under 20 and Under 17 level and 5th in Europe at Under 17 level, with Maria Chart ranked 2nd in Britain at both Under 17 and Under 20 level, and 17th in Europe at Under 17 level.
