Truro School Fencers Dominate GB and International Rankings
This October half term has seen a lot of air miles clocked up by our fencers. The Under 17 boys and girls travelled to Meylan for the first of the season’s European sabre circuit selection events.
In a field of 117 in the boys’ event, Bertie Holdsworth finished 63rd. This is a strong result as he is still only in the 3rd Year. Jamie Craze finished 24th and, in the team, event they finished 7th.
There were 105 fencers competing in the girls’ event and Maria Chart finished 24th with Caitlin Maxwell taking 6th place. They finished in Bronze position in the team event. These outstanding results in consecutive European events see Maria Chart now ranked as Number 1 in Great Britain at Under 17 level and ranked 16th in Europe. Caitlin Maxwell is ranked Number 2 in Great Britain at Under 17 level and is now ranked an excellent 4th in Europe.
Later in the half term Maria travelled to Sosnowviec for her first Under 20 international. In a field of 121 fencers she claimed an impressive 22nd place. This now places her as GB Number 1 at Under 20 level with Caitlin Maxwell in 3rd. To be ranked as Great Britain Number 1 at Under 17 and Under 20 levels is a remarkable achievement for Maria.
Yvonne Chart had an excellent Under 20 World cup in Bochum, Germany, where in a field of 105 she claimed victory over the world Number 2 finishing in 32nd place. This now ranks her as GB Under 20 Number 1 in women’s foil.
Will Deary continues his season in strong fashion and is now ranked 2nd in GB at Under 20 men’s sabre level; his first year competing as an Under 20. Jamie Craze is currently ranked 4th at Under 17 men’s sabre level.
