Fencing Summary – Week Beginning 10 February 2014

Last weekend saw the London International Sabre, which is the domestic leg of the European U17 circuit. There were over 120 fencers from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Romania, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland.

Josh Maxwell scored the best GB result with a strong 5th place. Will Deary was 13th. Of the younger fencers, Jamie Craze and Raoul Bonah made the Last 32. Bertie Holdsworth and Alex Boote in 3rd Year made their international debuts. In the girls’ event, Caitlin Maxwell placed 16th and still has two more years in the age group whilst Maria Chart was 24th. In the team event, Josh and Will led the GB team to bronze with a 45-42 win over Germany.

We are still awaiting selections for the World Championships which will be determined in the next week, but it seems certain that Josh and Will are going to be selected, along with Charlie Dean in men’s epee. Caitlin and Maria are battling one another for the last selection spot, and Yvonne Chart is likely to be picked too for the foil. This follows on the back of the European Championship selections last week of Will, Josh, Caitlin, Maria, Raoul Bonah, Yvonne and Charlie.

These selections see more Truro School fencers being selected for major Championships than any other club or school in Britain. We are also the only club with fencers selected in all three disciplines of foil, epee and sabre.
