Fencing Report – Week Beginning 11 January 2016

This weekend has been a busy one for our fencers who were competing at the Senior national championships in London and an Under 17 European circuit event in Austria. On the domestic front, Nick Howes finished a solid 11th place in the senior nationals. Caitlin Maxwell took the bronze in the women’s senior sabre, with Maria Chart clinching silver. In the team event on Sunday Nick helped his team take bronze, whilst Maria’s team took the silver.
Internationally, we had a large contingent make up the GB squad in their event in Moedling. In the women’s sabre, our younger fencers cruised through the first round but found the second round to be rather tough, and their campaign ended here. Molly Wood finished 132nd, Keely Rodda came 118th and Lily Wood 115th. Jenna Bray, still riding high after her selection this week for the European Championships finished in 98th.
In the men’s sabre event, Alex Boote strolled through the early rounds before being defeated to end the day in 76th. Bertie Holdsworth was ranked middle of the table and beat a competitor ranked significantly higher than him. He finished the day in 63rd. Jamie Craze made a strong start but eventually lost to a team mate, finishing in 44th.
