Years 1 and 2 Curriculum

Pupils in Key stage 1 continue to build on their knowledge and skills acquired during the foundation stage. The teachers in Years 1 and 2 offer rich and exciting experiences with regular trips, visitors and plenty of opportunities for hands on investigation and problem solving. Pupils continue to build upon and benefit from the specialist teaching lessons introduced earlier on in the school.

Developing Numeracy and Literacy

Our pupils are taught how to confidently use and apply their mathematical knowledge and relate it to their everyday lives. They develop excellent mental skills and are encouraged to give mathematical explanations of the strategies and methods they used to solve a problem.

In literacy pupils are introduced to wide range of genres and literature. We want pupils to enjoy the magic of books and to develop a love of both written and spoken language. Pupils are taught spelling and grammar rules and also consolidate their phonic knowledge.

Spelling, maths and topic homework are set on a weekly basis and pupils are encouraged to read or engage in a reading based activity each night.

Finally, the pupils also are introduced to computing and simple programming in Year 1 and enjoy using the school ICT suite.

Greater Independence

In Years 1 and 2 pupils are working towards working with greater independence. Pupils progress at different rates with some pupils needing further challenge and extension whereas others need additional support in a specific area. Careful monitoring, tracking and assessment of pupil progress allows us to best support children in their learning.
