On Monday 2 December, we were proud to welcome philosopher, theologian and author Dr Peter Vardy, to lead a conference for our Year 11 students.
Dr Vardy’s The Only Way is Ethics was aimed at stimulating the intellect of the Year 11s, during which they were treated like Sixth Form students for a day. The Year 11’s event was followed by a War and Will Sixth Form Conference.
Deputy Headmaster, Mr Fisher, called the morning sessions ‘a triumph’. He said: “I thought he was a compelling and witty communicator. Our Year 11s were superb, and a credit to the school.”
Peter Vardy gained a Ph.D. on The Concept of Eternity and has lectured in Philosophy of Religion at King’s College London and at the London Institute of Education. He is an author of many books related to issues in philosophy, religion, ethics and the theory of knowledge.
He has also made a number of appearances on the BBC discussing ethical issues and has written numerous articles on Philosophy, Ethics and the Nature of Truth.
Two lectures were followed by a university style seminar, which involved students from Roseland Community College, Newquay Tretheras, Treviglas and Richard Lander School.
Mr Sampson, teacher at Truro School, said: “I felt that Peter’s second session and constant message that we need to ‘interrogate culture’ was a good supplement to our PSHE education. It was good to see some overlap between PSHEE and Ethics teaching going on.”
This was intended to be the first of a series of annual conferences for students and teachers, focussing on a different aspect of religion, philosophy and ethics each year.
