On Sunday, Alexander, Benjy and Isaac competed in the Cornwall Cross Country Championships. Despite the heavy overnight rain, the course was not very muddy, but they did have to contend with gale force winds on this tough, hilly course.
Alexander ran first in the Under 17 men’s race (5km) and had an excellent run in what is a very strong Cornish age group. Unfortunately, he only just missed out on the medals, coming in 4th, but he will be happy with his early season form.
Performance of the day came from Benjy in the Under 15 boy’s race (4.5km). With 700m to go he was in second place and 50m behind, but showed great timing and determination to pull back the deficit and win his first county title by 30m. In doing so, he also beat some of the best runners from the south west. Isaac continues to improve, coming in 4th in the same race. Although also just outside the medals, this was a great result with him being a year young.
Although awaiting confirmation, these performances should mean that all three will represent Cornwall in the South West Inter Counties Championships in January at Yeovil. They will be joined by Finn and Harris who have already been selected.
Finn did not race on Sunday because on Saturday, he raced at Milton Keynes in the British Cross Challenge in the Under 17 men’s race. On a testing course he came 8th in a top-quality field featuring many internationals; a fine result at this stage of the season.
