As the Beast from the East met up with Storm Emma from the South, bringing Cornwall to a standstill, I have had a couple of days in my study thinking, reading and writing.  One interesting essay I read analysed why people seem reluctant to change their minds even when the evidence for their original opinion is shown to be...

I recently listened to a talk by Dr Simon Walker who is conducting some pioneering research into measuring and improving the impact of education on the developing minds of children. He spoke about the lens through which government looks at education which is focused on the three issues of employability, mental health and social mobility. Each of these issues faces respective challenges from Brexit, NHS funding constraints and social...

Having not inspected another school for a few years, I have now done two in a month. I was away for two days this week conducting a Regulatory Compliance Inspection of a day and boarding school in the South West. As ever, I find these visits a great source of professional development as we keep our eyes on our mission to be a beacon of inclusive...

I was recently invited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate to visit another school in the South West as a member of a nine strong team of inspectors. It is always a privilege to ‘look under the bonnet’ of other schools in the HMC group and to talk to students about school life and the care they receive. I look forward to reading the final report of the fine school that I...

After such an action packed week at school, I have enjoyed a day of challenging discussion but also the chance to reflect on what an impressive bunch of students we are blessed with. I suspect that the cast and crew of Fiddler on the Roof are rather at the end of an epic and are coming back to earth with a bit of a bump....

It’s been a busy start to the second half of our Autumn Term and life is showing no sign of slowing down. Our annual school production, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, launched this week, and with tickets for all four nights sold out, it’s certainly been eagerly anticipated....

Headmaster’s Blog – 24 September 2016

September 24, 2016

The school is getting used to the new pattern of the day. I’m sure it will take a few cycles to settle down but there is a general ‘thumbs up’ on the 50 minute lesson length. The beginning to the day certainly feels more purposeful and I’m thoroughly enjoying being able to be out and about first thing to help things off to a good start. Yesterday’s mid-morning HM assembly worked almost like clockwork so everyone got their break....
