I was intrigued to find out more about Truro Prep’s House Verse Competition as I have never come across anything quite like it before. I have heard children reciting poetry, performing poems and even putting poems to music but when I saw the huge screen set up like a cinema, I knew that I was about to experience another ‘first’. What followed was superb: there was humour (The PE Teacher Wants to be Tarzan; Attack of the Vegetables); word play (Yellow Butter, Purple Jelly, Red Jam, Black Bread); atmosphere (Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening) and nonsense verse mixed with a mighty battle (Jabberwocky)....

The new term has started with great speed at Truro Prep, especially for Year 5 who left for PGL’s Beam House, in Devon, last Wednesday. I first encountered PGL twenty-five years ago when I was a young, newly qualified teacher; we travelled from Birmingham to Ross-on-Wye for that trip and I was instantly hooked, volunteering to go on every trip for the next three...

Pre-Prep Head’s Blog: ‘Spring Fever in the Pre-Prep’

May 2, 2017

I don’t know about anybody else but the summer term has always been one of my favourite times of the year and what an exciting first week back in the Pre-Prep we have had. The Pre-Prep is looking just stunning, with the blossom and spring flowers at their very best and the children (and staff) have all come back completely refreshed from their holiday and full of the joys of...

Prep Head’s Blog: 31 March 2017

March 31, 2017

As winter has turned to spring, we have seen more than the usual changes to the seasonal landscape as some of our older buildings have been removed and/or demolished to make way for our new classrooms, assembly hall and music and drama studio. Many of the children shared a dramatic moment with me last week when we saw the old assembly hall literally being demolished in front of us; there were some great moments of empathy, not least for the feelings of Mrs Gregory who has seen scores of plays performed in that...

Having not inspected another school for a few years, I have now done two in a month. I was away for two days this week conducting a Regulatory Compliance Inspection of a day and boarding school in the South West. As ever, I find these visits a great source of professional development as we keep our eyes on our mission to be a beacon of inclusive...

I was recently invited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate to visit another school in the South West as a member of a nine strong team of inspectors. It is always a privilege to ‘look under the bonnet’ of other schools in the HMC group and to talk to students about school life and the care they receive. I look forward to reading the final report of the fine school that I...

Our annual Prep School Open Morning took place on Saturday 11 March and it really was a fantastic event. I was able to leave my ‘meet and greet’ position a couple of times during the morning to go and see exactly what was happening around the...

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the leadership opportunities that our sports leadership programme is developing, where our Year 6 pupils provide sporting activities for pupils in Years 1 and 2. I have enjoyed learning more about this programme and thought it would be a good idea to share some of the specifics of the set-up....

A huge thank you to those parents who were able to attend our meeting on Wednesday about the new building project. In my end of term letter (December 2016) and my start of term letter (January 2017), I outlined some of the changes that were starting to take place but it was especially good to be able to explain and describe the project in more detail to parents in...

One of the challenges that we have set ourselves this year is to extend and enrich our pupils, particularly in areas that might not be taught within our curriculum. I am delighted that we are shortly to start our new Enrichment Club for Years 5 and 6 that will take place on Monday afternoons at 4 00...

After such an action packed week at school, I have enjoyed a day of challenging discussion but also the chance to reflect on what an impressive bunch of students we are blessed with. I suspect that the cast and crew of Fiddler on the Roof are rather at the end of an epic and are coming back to earth with a bit of a bump....
