Modern Foreign Languages Scholarships

We are looking for exceptionally able and enthusiastic candidates who will be ambassadors for Modern Foreign Languages at Truro School.

The Headmaster is pleased to announce a Sixth Form Modern Languages Scholarship for students entering the Sixth Form in September 2020.

Two awards will be made: One internal and one external candidate will each be eligible for a 10% award (supported, where necessary by a Means-Tested Bursary).

Applicants should be exceptionally able and motivated candidates who wish to study two Modern Foreign Languages at A-Level (from French, German and Spanish).

In return, scholars will receive the teaching and guidance of staff who have a wealth of experience in nurturing gifted students to fulfil their academic potential. There will be extension opportunities in both languages and the opportunity to take part in language competitions, which in the past have included Juvenes Translatores, The Stephen Spender Trust poetry competition and the Routes into Languages speaking competition.

Modern Language scholars will be given additional guidance and tutorial style extension lessons to extend their literary knowledge as well as one to one language sessions with the Language Assistants. Students will be encouraged to take part in biennial work experience and trips dependent on languages chosen. Students who have studied languages at Truro School have gone on to study languages or indeed combined honour degrees with a language at leading Russell Group universities.

All Modern Language Scholars are expected to:
  • Ensure that they maintain the highest standards of effort in their academic studies.
  • Apply commitment, reliability and enthusiasm to extension opportunities.
  • Support the school at academic events as requested
The Application Process

The two scholarships will be awarded on the basis of predicted GCSE grades, responses to questions posed on the application form and an interview with a member of the Modern Languages department in each of the applicant’s chosen languages. A short-list of candidates will be selected for interview. As part of the interview process, there will be a short conversation in the target language. Candidates will also be given a grammar test on tenses at GCSE level only.

Application Forms

Completed application forms should be returned by Friday, 5 November 2021 to:
