A trip to the other side of Truro saw the 2nd team embark on one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the campaign against bitter rivals Truro College. After a heavy defeat to a strong Helston side in the previous week, it seemed that coming out with anything from the game seemed unlikely but in true 2nd team fashion we battled on.

The girls had the opportunity to play on a slightly bigger pitch than they were used to and played 9 aside. We had the majority of possession during the first half but the High School defended well and we had too many of our players in the attacking circle making it difficult to find space.

We had Richard Lander and Pool School in our group, we played Richard Lander first and this was a very tough match with it ending in a 1-1 draw with both teams playing some very good hockey and having opportunities to win the game.

Truro U12s travelled to Brannel for their first game of the season. Playing a format of 2 x 7 a side games, the ‘A’ squad convincingly won 7-1 with Mike Austin and William Trew each scoring a hat-trick, alongside the other goal scorer Jack Piercy.

On a dreary wet Wednesday, we arrived at Brannell for what I expected to be a dour game in difficult conditions. However, we were allocated the 3G pitch which was great.

We played at Marjons in Plymouth. We started the match with a very defensive format. This didn’t work in the first half and we spent most of the time being pressed into our D. At half time the score was 1-1 after a superb goal by Charlie Pendarves.

Truro started brightly with Michael May scoring within the first ten minutes, however the rest of the first half belonged to Newquay and we did well to sustain the high pressure and go into the interval at 1.0.

The U12 A Team continued to impress in this their second fixture of the PSP tournament. A strong visiting Penryn side made for an exciting and well fought for game.

The girls played well from the start scoring within the first minute of the game. Penryn improved and were marking closely but the Truro girls move into space to receive the ball and had the majority of possession.

Truro 1st XV made the long journey to Oxfordshire to play Abingdon School in the last 16 of the Daily Mail U18 Cup on Wednesday. Abingdon are a large all boys school of 900 pupils, who play on a strong fixture circuit, including the likes of Bromsgrove, Radley, St Edward’s, Eton and St Paul’s and Truro knew it would take an exceptional performance to progress to the quarter finals.

We started off well in the first half managing to penetrate through their defence and Kiran Bhardwaj scored a great goal to put us 1-0 up. Soon after, Truro College equalised and picked up the momentum. Unfortunately, Truro College scored a controversial goal which caused us to be a little distracted and by half time we were 1-2 down.

Truro will be disappointed with this result after beating Penryn earlier in the season 5. 0. On a very difficult surface Truro struggled to play with their normal fluency. Truro missed the best chance in the 1st half in a game dominated by the conditions.

It was played in a new indoor venue which provided a unique challenge for many teams. With Julia Nilsson as captain the other nine girls seemed excited and well prepared for what promised to be a tiring day.

Preparations had gone well for the tournament and everyone was feeling positive. The squad of 11 players had trained hard in the previous week’s sessions. Unfortunately at the last minute due to injury and sickness 2 players couldn’t play, this unsettled the girls but by the time we reached Penryn College the girls were up for the challenge.

At the start, the girls struggled with the speed of the game. The college players moved well with the ball whilst our players were too eager to pass the ball, and so often lost our advantage. The defence played well. Niamh Dunne was strong in defence and Jess Lovett played well in goal. Unfortunately the college won 0-1.

The first race was the junior girls with Alex Maskell coming 4th and the team finishing an excellent 2nd.

Truro 1st XV travelled to Taunton School on Saturday and narrowly lost a very evenly contested game 11-16. Truro started the game strongly, but went behind to a well-taken penalty. Olly Hallworth evened the score at 3-3, before a well executed lineout play resulted in a converted try for Taunton just before the interval.
