While many universities will state their specific required grades (AAB for example), others will make offers based on the tariff system, such as 240 points.
You can achieve 240 points in a number of ways. For example, your A level results could be ACE or BCD or CCC. Many universities allow you to include your fourth, AS, subject in the tariff score, so, for example, CDD at A2 and a C at AS would be accepted. Check the entry profiles for each course at each university to be sure.
The important point is that if you go on to take the A2 in a subject you can't count the AS points in the final tally of UCAS points, but if you stop at the end of AS you can often add it to your other A2s.
The system does award tariff points for some other qualifications, such as Music. These may be taken into account by the university, especially if the qualification is relevant to the degree, but our experience has been that universities generally expect the points to be gained just from your A and AS level qualifications.

A UCAS entry profile will often give you a huge amount of information about the courses you want to study. They provide details about entry qualifications, selection criteria and the personal qualities they see as desirable. All of this is essential for making fully informed choices and is especially useful when writing a personal statement. There is usually also some information about the university – how many students there are, the availability of accommodation, the cost of accommodation etc. Not all courses have full entry profiles yet.
They can be found on the UCAS website. Do a course search, and highlight the course about which you want to know more. You will see the link to the entry profile.
