Choosing your subject - Nursery & Midwifery
It is possible to qualify for these careers in two ways:
- Via the Diploma route, which takes three years and leads to DipHE status
- Via a degree in Nursing or Midwifery
The difference lies in:
-
the minimum entry requirements. A levels are required for the degree route.
- The funding arrangements. Students on degree courses receive a means tested NHS bursary and are entitled to apply for a reduced student loan. Students on diploma courses are entitled to a (larger) non-means tested NHS bursary, but cannot apply for a loan. In both cases, the tuition fees are paid by the NHS.
It is possible for Diploma trained nurses and midwives to obtain a degree qualification via a further period of study – one year full time or two years part-time.
The general advice is that a degree is advisable for those who are ambitious and aspire to a post in clinical management.
Application for both qualifications is through UCAS.
