I have always been a practical person and have enjoyed solving problems. As my school career has progressed, I have tried to find more interesting and challenging problems to solve.
This interest has developed into a love for electronics. In the first few years of secondary school I started making small scale circuits such as door alarms and intercoms. As computers grew more accessible I developed an interested in programming and the interfacing of electronics. At times a stressful and infuriating process, I have learnt to be patient, and acquired the ability to solve problems under pressure. I was particularly interested in micro controllers and have made several projects integrating this technology, one of which was an anemometer. The necessity for PCs has also given me the chance to build and commission several computers and I have enjoyed tackling issues involving these often precise procedures. My A-levels have inspired me further, especially the problem solving side of mechanics, which I have found particularly stimulating.
I have a passion for sailing. I have represented Great Britain in several European countries including since the age of 10, and am currently in the RYA national youth squad. I have learnt a lot about the motion of air over aerofoils and the efficiency of this process. I've also done a lot of coaching for 11-14yr olds racing Optimist dinghies. Sailing a two handed boat and coaching have taught me a great deal about the importance of communication and teamwork in pressured situations.
Living in Cornwall has given me the opportunity to become a keen surfer. Combining my love for water sports and engineering, I was able to make myself a surfboard. This involved shaping a Polyurethane-foam blank, and working with GRP products. Shaping is a very technical job, and I have found the development of board design fascinating. I have been a musician for most of my life, starting the piano when I was 5. I now play the alto Saxophone to grade 8 standard. I play in various bands including a Joe Cocker tribute band, and first alto in the school jazz band and saxophone quartet. Being in a critically acclaimed band where teamwork is vital has taught me the importance of time management and perseverance.
At school I am a prefect responsible for a year 8 form and help to bridge the gap between pupils and their tutors. I am also a member of ACHE counselling scheme, which offers an opportunity for students to talk to someone like me rather than a teacher. I have been involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and play squash regularly.
