Art Foundation courses

Many students who want ultimately to take a degree in Art and Design will take a Foundation course at a local college prior to entering a Higher Education course. Falmouth University College still offers the Foundation course but entry is very competitive.  For this reason we recommend that those who want an Art Foundation should apply to other colleges, such as Truro College, as well as Falmouth.  Some students apply further afield.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the major areas of art and design and help them to focus on which area they wish to specialise in.  Many university and college degree require applicants to have taken a Foundation course before starting the degree.

Applications are made in January of the year of entry.  Falmouth College will set the applicant a drawing and painting project, which needs to be completed over ten days.  The college will look at this and decide whether to offer a place or to reject, or to invite the applicant for interview with their portfolio.  Truro College will interview the applicant with their portfolio.

Foundation courses are free for those who are under 19 years of age at the start of the course, but there is no other financial support such as a student loan.

Portfolio

A good portfolio of artwork is an essential part of the selection process for a degree or foundation course. It is essential that the work shown reflects your own motivation, interests, talent and imagination, and that it is presented in a professional way. Make sure you obtain advice on the content and presentation of your portfolio from Mr Meads, who will advise you and who supervises applications for Foundation courses.
