Netball is one of the two main sports played by the girls at Truro School during the Autumn and Spring terms. The school is one of the most successful in the County and South West, often winning the County tournaments and then going on to represent Cornwall in the Regional finals. One particular year group reached the National finals five years in a row. Sara Henshall and Sophie Vaughan represented England whilst at the school and Rachel Northover played for Team Bath Youth. The fixture list is extensive and the school travels as far a field as Millfield and The Maynard School (Exeter) to ensure that our girls play a high standard of netball. However netball is incredibly popular and we do ensure that there are many matches so all girls can be included in the competitive game.
In recent years there have been highly successful tours to Bath and South Africa where the girls have experienced different styles of play whilst also promoting team cohesion.
The school enters all of the National competitions and County Tournaments.
Three teaching staff and two netball coaches look after the teams (Mrs Zoe Jobling, Mrs Sonya Newton, Mr Duncan O'Neill, Mrs Sue Willey and Mrs Jackie Tresidder).
The girls are also provided with opportunities to develop their coaching and umpiring at the school. A large proportion of the girls are selected into the County area academies and then into the full Keltic teams. Some of these are also invited to the West of England Netball Academy (WENA) where they receive expert coaching from former National Coach Jean Davies and current England Player Jo Binns. In April 2010 current pupil Amelia Grigg aged 15 gained selection into England Under 17's.
We had a fabulous tour, the weather was kind and the girls were brilliant. The standard of the hockey was very high and unfortunately a little too strong for our squad nonetheless the girls worked hard and never gave up. The netball squad played really well and the combination of the fifth years with our lower sixth created a super team (it is a shame that some are now leaving us!)
