Hockey is one of the main girls' sports played at Truro School from September through to Easter. The school is highly successful within the County and the sport has flourished since the building of the astroturf in 2005. Many school teams are successful in the County tournaments and continue on to represent Cornwall in the Regional finals. Our fixture list is extensive playing many local schools including Mount House, Kelly College, Plymouth College and Truro College.
In recent years there have been hockey tours to Sussex and South Africa where the girls have experienced a great standard of hockey whilst also experiencing the cultural life of a foreign country.
The school enters many competitions including the Under 14, 16 and 18 National competitions and County tournaments in both indoor and outdoor hockey. Truro School are also represented at Local Junior leagues including the U12 and U13 teams at the Penair League and the U15's at the Penzance league. Occasionally the school will field mixed teams to play against some other local schools, and during the summer term enter the St Austell Mixed Summer League where they have been champions on a number of occasions.
Three coaches are currently working with the hockey teams this term; Miss Joanne Bales, Miss Viv Cobner and Miss Lizzie Hancock.
Truro School have a large number of pupils who take their Hockey Foundation Umpires awards each year, we actively encourage our pupils to become involved in both coaching and umpiring. Many of our players are involved in the local development programmes where they receive additional coaching and some go on to play for the County under 18's.
We had a fabulous tour, the weather was kind and the girls were brilliant. The standard of the hockey was very high and unfortunately a little too strong for our squad nonetheless the girls worked hard and never gave up. The netball squad played really well and the combination of the fifth years with our lower sixth created a super team (it is a shame that some are now leaving us!)
