(i) the principles and methods of fitness training
(ii) the role of the skeletal, muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems in relation to physical exercise.
(iii) diet for sports performers and prevention of injury.
Within a practical environment pupils will follow short courses in a range of sporting activities and will be assessed on both their performance and knowledge of these activities.

(ii) the factors that affect participation in sport, such as the role of the school and family.
Within the practical environment, pupils will decide on four sporting activities from the prescribed list that are most suited to their abilities and will be given the opportunity to improve performance and knowledge in these areas.
The course is run with one or two mixed ability classes and is taught for four periods a week. Two periods are classroom based and covers much of the theoretical element such as the relationship between exercise and the skeletal, muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems. The other two periods are within a practical environment where the pupil pursues a range of activities such as football, swimming, badminton, hockey and many others. Prep is set regularly for each double lesson.
The exams are set by AQA.
There is a two hour written examination that is common to all pupils at the end of the course. The questions are set with increased difficulty testing pupils of all abilities. The content of this examination paper follows the work done in the classroom based lessons and counts for 40% of the overall assessment.
In addition to the written examination, all pupils will be assessed on four practical sporting activities of their choice from the prescribed list. Within each activity they will be assessed on their performance, their knowledge of rules and roles of officials, and their ability to analyse their own and others' performance.
The practical component of the course carries a total of 60% of the overall assessment.
