What will be taught?

In September 2006 a new science syllabus will be introduced that includes the usual topics in the present GCSE Biology and expands it to introduce ideas on 'how science works'.  The course is designed to progress from Key Stage 3 science to Biology at A level.

The course is split into Biology 1, Biology 2 and Biology 3.

Human biology

Biology and environment

Evolution

Humans in environment

Biology 2

Cell behaviour

Management of waste

Homeostasis

Inheritance

Biology 3

Chemical transport in plants

Chemical transport in man

The effect of exercise

The kidneys

Using microorganisms

How will it be taught?

Pupils will be taught a variety of practical skills and these will be examined as part of the course.
The subject content and practical work is taught in four periods, usually two double periods by one teacher.

How will it be examined?

The GCSE in Biology involves an examination in each of the subject areas Biology 1, Biology 2, and Biology 3 and these, allied to the practical assessment contribute 25% each to the final mark.  It is anticipated that module 1 will be examined at the end of the Fourth Year and that there will be an opportunity to retake this paper, if necessary, at the end of the Fifth Year.  The practical is designed to be completed completely within class time and there are two tasks that will need to be submitted to the board to achieve the GCSE.
