2008-2009
Truro School’s Music Department is led by the dynamic Martin Palmer, together with three outstanding teachers from the school’s academic staff and 33 of the best music teachers in Cornwall, who teach a wide range of instruments on a peripatetic basis.
This year six U6th pupils leave Truro School to study music, one with a choral award to Oxford University. Over the last twelve months pupils have performed with the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Choir. Three pupils are about to take their ABRSM / ARCO diploma examinations this month (July 2009).
This academic year (2008 – 9) pupils have performed in 7 services, 50 concerts and 4 performances of Mozart’s Opera The Magic Flute, including the usual major events at the Hall for Cornwall, Truro Cathedral, Truro School Chapel, Truro School Gymnasium and the Burrell Theatre. Ensembles included the Symphony Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra, Senior, Junior and 1st Form Jazz Orchestras, Jazz Choir, Wind Band, Junior Wind Band, Senior and Junior Choirs, Samba Band, Barbershop Quartet, Guitar Groups and numerous smaller ensembles such as cello groups, clarinet groups, rock, folk and other bands.
Six pupils were selected for a Singing Master Class with Ben Luxon and all the school’s choirs joined a professional orchestra in Truro Cathedral to perform John Rutter’s Feel the Spirit with international mezzo soprano Melanie Marshall. The school’s second CD is just being finished and will be released in October 2009.
Music as a classroom subject is taught along the lines of the National Curriculum to First, Second and Third Form pupils and is an option for GCSE and A-level.
Individual tuition is available to all pupils in the complete range of orchestral instruments as well as piano, organ, guitar and voice.
