Rugby Summary – Week Beginning Monday 7 September

1st XV vs Former Pupils

The new rugby season kicked off in successful style as the 1st XV won a very competitive opening game against the Former Pupils 28-7 with tries from Seb Firth, Sam Haywood, Rob Grigg and Dan Hubble, with Matt Poole kicking three conversions. The game was played in a superb spirit and both sides are to be commended on their approach to the game.

1st XV vs Penwith College

On Wednesday 9 September the 1st XV were back in action as they travelled to Penwith College for a Cornwall Under 18 league fixture. Playing up a significant slope, Truro dominated the early exchanges but were denied by a resolute defence and it was Penwith who took the lead against the run of play in the 30th minute. Truro responded quickly with tries by Sam Haywood and Will Hooper to lead 12-5 at the interval.
 
Playing with the advantage of the slope, Truro excelled in the second half and a further 8 tries were scored to give us a 64-5 win. Try scorers in the second half were Will Hooper (2), Sam Cumins, Seb Firth, Matt Poole, Johnny Wood, Dan Hubble and Hugo Page. Matt Poole kicked 7 conversions from the 10 tries scored.

2nd XV vs Truro College 3rd XV

On the same day, the 2nd XV won their first encounter of the season with a hard fought victory over Truro College 3rd XV in the County league. Fielding a side with many new lower sixth players, the school dominated the first half, taking a 17-5 lead at the interval. In the second half, the college were able to enjoy much of the possession, and rallied with two more tries of their own. The windy conditions made conditions difficult at times, and Truro managed to hang on to record a 17-15 victory. Harry Whinney and Ross Warren were the try scorers, with Dan Alford kicking 2 conversions and a penalty.
