Drama, Music and Art are all taken very seriously within the school, with timetabled lessons in each for all pupils every week, throughout the school. In the Pre-Prep there are termly performances involving all the pupils from age 3 to 7, combining dance, music and drama. From Year 3, each year group has its own annual production, ensuring that every child takes part in a play and allowing a wide range of pupils to take lead roles. The Year 6 production, undertaken during the very last week of the year, is put on at the Burrell Theatre at Truro School, not only taking advantage of the excellent facilities there, but giving the pupils a foretaste of life to come at the Senior School.
The musical life of the school is hectic with a school band, a boys’ choir, a girls’ choir and a whole school choir. There are a number of concerts throughout the year, including a joint concert with the Senior School at the Hall for Cornwall, participation in the Cornwall Music Festival and the International Male Voice Choirs Festival, when the Boys’ Choir not only participates, but the school hosts workshops given by visiting boys’ choirs.
Pupils can have individual instruction in a broad range of musical instruments with some of the best teachers in Cornwall. Small, informal concerts, organised by their teachers, allow pupils to begin to perform in public in front of parents and friends.
The standard of pupils’ art is exceptional and benefits both from some outstanding teaching and a wonderful Art Room. The school proudly hosts a wonderful collection of art by well-known local artists, including Ray Atkins, Brean O’Casey and Terry Frost.
