Junior Boys’ Boarding Update – 9 September

After last week’s busy induction weekend, it was the first regular weekend in the boarding house. The boys have settled in really well and having the extra time just for new boarders certainly helped with the settling in process.

The induction weekend included activities like City familiarisation, School Shop visits, pizza and DVD nights, sports such as squash, badminton, table-tennis and basketball in the fabulous Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre, EAL, fencing with top international coaches and a visit to the Oasis Water Park in Newquay.

It was a lovely opportunity to meet so many parents of existing and new boarders and share a meal together on the Sunday evening.

This weekend began with the usual chance to relax after the first week of our new 2 week timetable! Friday evening was a mixture of prep and activities in the Sports Centre and relaxing and enjoying the surroundings of the new home of junior boys boarding…Poltisco House. The house is warm and homely and already has a good feel to it. There is much to look forward to…although I am not yet convinced the steep hill up to school is one of them?!!! The boys will soon be much fitter as they negotiate the hill several times a day!

Saturday saw early school rugby matches against the very strong Ivybridge College, Anthony played for the Under 15’s and James played for the Under 14’s. With time to kill and energy still to burn the boys spent an hour in the Sports Centre playing basketball before supper.

Tradition is that Saturday night is pizza and DVD night and so my oven swung into action just after 8pm to make pizzas whilst the guys watched ‘Now you see me’. The boys really appreciate the weekend lie-ins and with brunch at 9.45am on Saturday and 10.45am on Sunday it means very welcome slow starts to the day and a chance to recharge batteries!

Sunday was 10 pin bowling at Truro Bowl and with a prize of pizza for the highest score it was competitive to say the least. Scores were quite close, except for me of course and the eventual winner by just one skittle over Cam was Trevor!! To the victor the spoils!!

After a walk back through town and a super evening meal from Kath in the dining hall, it was Sunday evening and the chance to finish prep and prepare for the week ahead. Week B looms large and it will be a short time before everyone is fully adjusted to the demands and organisation of the new system.
