Regional Netball Finals – Marlborough College

Under 14’s

The Under 14s performed admirably in their first experience of Regional netball; 12 girls were in the squad and all players took to the court at some point, some more than others. Truro started in fine form, playing some good netball and were the talking point around the courts. Captain Rosie led from the front playing some excellent netball and scoring some fabulous shots.

V Cheltenham College Won 15-8

V St Gregory’s Won 14-7

V Canford Lost 7-8

V Marlborough Won 9-7

V St Peter’s Won 9-4

Runners up in the group meant we met The Maynard School, Exeter in the semi-finals. Truro started well and were 5-1 up, only for The Maynard to come back strong and won 15-12. Truro making too many passing errors.

The deflated girls knowing that the Nationals were now just out of their reach had to play a 3rd/4th play off against Millfield. It was not to be, losing 9-11. This was a fantastic experience for the girls and all of them should be commended on doing so well. They will be back fighting in two years time as Under 16s.

Under 16

Under 16s Won 2. Drew 1. Lost 3.

With perfect playing conditions and a beautiful setting the Under 16 s were feeling in a positive and confident mood. The squad consisting of nine Under 16s and three Under 15 players were ably lead by Captain Emily , had six group matches ahead. Isambard in the first round, a confident start and an 8-5 win. Next, the Royal HS, a good first half but the HS rallied in the second half and we faltered and narrowly lost 6-8. A nerve biting draw against Dean Close followed but the team settled and we produced a great win against Bournemouth 7-5. We really needed to secure the last two wins to get to the playoffs but it was not to be, 9-13 down to group leaders Taunton and 5-12 to St.Peters(Exeter). Finishing 3rd in their group, still a very admirable achievement, well done to all of the players who were a credit to the school.

Under 18

This was always going to be a tough competition for the girls but we started the day full of enthusiasm and intent. After a good warm up the girls first match was against Marlborough and at half time the score was 6 – 4 in Marlborough’s favour but we contested for every ball.  We defended all the way down the court and pressurised our oppositions passes. In the second half we gave Marlborough far too much space enabling them to work the ball to their shooters. Losing 13 – 8.

The second match went the same way a tight first half then making unforced errors in our passing and not pressurising Canford. Final score 11 – 4.

This was how the rest of the matches went, certainly a game of two halves. We need to keep the intensity up for the whole game.  This was a great experience for them and hopefully next year the lower 6th will take on the challenge.

Wellsway 10 – 4 (L)

Millfield 15 – 2 (L)

Exeter College 11 – 5 (L)

Chosen Hill 12 – 1 (L)

Wednesday 25 Januray

Under 15 vs The Maynard Lost 20-29

The Under 15s travelled to The Maynard School in Exeter for their first fixture this term. With injuries and sickness doing the rounds we were not at full strength. Despite this, the girls displayed excellent camaraderie and team spirit. Maynard’s came out strong winning the first 3 quarters 11 – 4, 8 – 6 and 7-4. The girls were determined to prove their ability and went out fighting in the 4th quarter winning 6 – 3.

Zoe was voted player of the match and Molly was coaches player of the match.

Under 13 vs The Maynard Won 19-8

Truro had a very good first quarter and settled quickly into their flow. In the second quarter the whole squad defended well making numerous interceptions but the shooters felt under greater pressure which put them off shooting successfully. Gaining their composure they went into the third quarter with an increased hunger for the ball, contesting and winning a high percentage of loose ball and then successfully getting the goals. The final quarter was again a good team effort. It was overall a positive performance but the girls now need to work on driving to the ball and ensuring they are ball side.

Under 12 vs The Maynard Won 16-14

This was a very closely contested game for the Under 12s. Truro dominated the first quarter and took a 5-2 lead with some good linking play between Evelyn and Charlotte. The Maynard came back fighting but Truro managed to hold onto the lead. A great first result against the strong netball school. Heidi was voted player of the match.

Wednesday 18 January

Under 12B vs Polwhele Won 14-6

The Under 12 had a convincing win in a ‘5’s’ netball match at Polwhele School on Wednesday. Amy was voted player of the match by the players for her shooting and passing and Eloise was awarded the coaches’ player for her excellent shooting and strategic play.

Tuesday 17 January

Under 18 vs The Maynard

A Won 18-17

In a nail – biting final warm up game before the regional finals at the end of the month, school edged old adversaries The Maynard thanks to some dead-eye shooting from Amy, Savannah and Sophia.  The defence also looked promising and solid and the girls should feel good about heading to Marlborough on January 28th.

B Won 8-3

The Under 18s B dominated the game from the start. Izzy had a superb game in the shooting circle ably supported by Lowenna. Truro led 6 – 0 at half time. Maynard came back fighting in the second half but Lara controlled the defending circle making many interceptions.

Truro School Vs Penryn College

Under 14 Won 25-7

An excellent performance from the Under 14s in their last match before the Regionals. Truro made life very difficult for a strong opposition and all the squad should be incredibly proud of themselves.

Under 16 Won 33-25

These are always high contested matches and this was no exception. Truro took the lead in the first quarter but had a shaky 2nd throwing away passes. Going into the 3rd quarter 2 goals down the girls fought hard and levelled the score. Fitness told in the last quarter and Truro had some great passages of play coming out winners.

Tuesday 10 January

Under 14 vs Truro High School Won 14-11

The Under 14s were a little shaky to start after the Christmas break. This was a training match for the Regionals at the end of January; with lots of 7 minutes being played. We tried out various combinations. The weather was not great and light was fading fast but Truro improved throughout after the High School taking an early lead. Laura has an excellent game.

Under 16 vs Truro High School Drew 13-13

This was a training match in preparation for the Regional netball finals in 2 weeks time. It was an opportunity to try different combinations and give all girls equal court time. Alice and Emily played superbly and Aahba was steady in the centre third.
