With Harris on international duty next weekend it was left to Finn, Alexander and Benjy to travel up to Cofton Park, Birmingham, last Saturday to represent Cornwall at the final cross country ‘national’ of the season. 41 counties were present, including representatives from Wales and Scotland.
In spring-like conditions, the races were expected to be fast; the ground was firm with little mud across the course and ‘only’ two significant hills to contend with.
In the Under 15 Boys race (4.8km), the best performance of the day came from Finn who showed he has not lost any of his international pedigree. After a great start he was amongst the leading pack of ten for the first kilometre. As the race continued, this group splintered leaving Finn on his own in 6th place but after a strong last kilometre he managed to capture 5th position (1st south-west runner) and was only 2 seconds behind 4th place! A really excellent run.
In the same race, Alexander crossed the line in 116th position (out of 305 runners) following a fall and a first kilometre that was maybe a bit too fast on this course. This was still a very good result, however, given the quality of the field and it placed him 14th from the seven south-west counties.
In the Under 13 Boys race (3.3km), Benjy had a solid run, coming in a very creditable 147th out of 311 runners. This placed him 15th from the south-west counties. The boys helped Cornwall to 14th and 19th in the Under 15 and Under 13 races respectively.
This concludes a very successful cross country season for the school pupils. Thanks go to Mr Knowles and Mr Austin for all their help and support. Now for the track season!
