On the last day of their quarantine, a wealthy couple’s house is invaded by two strangers - a sailor and a girl who might not be what she seems. And so another month of quarantine begins. Watched over by their jailor, these four must find a way to survive both the plague and each other.

Unlikely bargains are struck, and brutal games played in this searing and lyrical drama exploring the politics of compassion within the shadow of the grave.

This production is both an installation art piece and a performance piece.

Duchy Opera presents:

THE MERRY WIDOW

The Merry Widdow Flyer

Duchy Opera will be shining the spotlight on a little corner of Bohemia in October this year, with an unusual and riotous new production by Director, Keith Sparrow, of Franz Lehar’s famous operetta, The Merry Widow.

One of the most popular of all operettas, it was instantly successful, although it was thought rather risqué, given its romantic entanglements and this production looks set to continue the trend. Originally produced in German in 1905, it is an operetta in three acts sung in English.

Replacing the familiar Parisian society setting will be a run-down Berlin cabaret bar, which Mr Sparrow's direction sets at a momentous time in history – the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Amidst a gathering of artists, writers and musicians, who reunite after 28 years to celebrate their Bohemian lifestyles, the operetta tells the story of the beautiful widow, Anna Glawari, whose rich, elderly husband has died just one week after their wedding, leaving her with the world at her feet.

Cornwall has such a vibrant and eclectic arts scene, that I feel really resonates with the whole Bohemian lifestyle," said Mr Sparrow. "Our aim is to portray the sense of optimism and freedom that was overflowing at that time and place in history, and infuse it with some real Cornish energy. “

Lehar’s magical score has some of the most memorable and joyous music you will ever hear coupled with a simple plot, dancing girls, comedy and spoken dialogue – it’s a must for anyone curious about this most wonderful and intriguing art form – opera.

A sell-out event in 2009, we recommend early booking to avoid disappointment.

THE RIOT

The Riot

Nick Darke left us in 2005, but thankfully his wonderful work will live forever and the 18-month-long festival to celebrate his life and works continues.

As part of the Darke Visions Season, Hookline Theatre will be bringing Nick’s tale of the Newlyn fish riots to The Burrell. Using a backdrop of grainy black and white film and a simple, but effective set to evoke the hard times of the 1890’s, the marvellous cast took us back to the days of closing tin mines, devious businessmen and the downtrodden Cornish. History, as they say, repeats itself.

The play revolves around the lives of the Newlyn share fishermen who staunchly observed the Sabbath, but things began to unravel when boats from England fished the Cornish waters on Sundays and landed their catch in our harbours.

The ensuing riots and long term effects on the Cornish fishing industry were brought to life by the Hookline cast with passion and comedy. Tugging at the heartstrings by adding a moving soundtrack of hymns recorded by Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir, along with original music by Jim Carey and Jamie Crowe this was a wonderful interpretation by a truly Cornish theatre company. Hard to believe from this fine performance that Hookline only formed a few months ago and The Riot is their first production under directors Theresa Forbes- Pearce and Harry Forbes Pearce.
