On Thursday 8th October we travelled to Mount Kelly in Tavistock to race in the first round of the England Schools Athletics Association Cross Country cup. Having walked the course with all four teams, we saw that it was very flat and likely to be very fast.
The Junior Girls’ team were up first and they put in a fine performance with Scarlet and Rosie coming home in 6th and 7th place respectively, followed in by Izzie at 16th, Poppy at 27th and Millie at 30th. This gave a team place of 3rd out of 11 teams which left us just out of the two qualification places for the regional finals.
The Junior Boys’ team were next up and the boys were keen to continue the success. There were 10 teams in this race and Sam and Benjy ran well together pushing each other all the way with Sam just pulling away at the end to finish in 7th with Benjy just behind in 8th. Will, Milo and Isaac came 21st, 27th and 29th with good performances and this gave the boys a team place of 4th again just missing out on regional qualification.
The Intermediate Girls’ race started at a fast pace and never really slowed down, Emily looked strong throughout and ran a good race tactically and finished well in 3rd position. Scarlet, Lily and Maddie were next in at 12th, 13th, and 14th, running well as a group and helping each other along the course and Freya was not far behind coming in at 21st. This left the girls team in second place and qualifying for the regional finals.
The Intermediate Boys ran a superb race with Finn and Harris leading from the front, they were never challenged and came in 1st and 2nd place, closely followed by Alexander coming in in 4th and Elliot in 12th with Ben and George coming 21st and 26th. This was the team performance of the day and the boys finished in 1st place and join the girls in qualifying for the regional finals on Saturday 7th November.
