Pupils receive a comprehensive programme of Careers and FE support and guidance throughout the 4th and 5th Years. Pupils have Careers lessons with Mr Brewer, who has responsibility for overseeing all Careers advice throughout the school, supported by Ms Shaw. These are augmented by a variety of talks and workshops throughout the two years, as well as visits from liaison officers from the armed forces and the possibility of speaking to our linked Connexions advisors.
Every 5th Year pupil meets with the Headmaster in the Autumn to discuss their post-GCSE intentions and all pupils have a further interview with Mr Brewer in the Spring Term, focussing specifically on subjects at A Level and beyond.
The school hosts a biennial Careers Fair in the Summer Term, at which a wide range of employers and Higher Education institutions is present. The Careers Room, located in the Sixth Form Centre, hosts a plethora of information about careers and HE institutions and pupils are welcome to drop in to see Mr Brewer and Ms Shaw. In addition, the Careers staff are always available to meet with parents to discuss particular needs or address certain queries. Whilst Work Experience is not formally offered, all pupils are encouraged to undertake relevant work experience, in either the summer after the 4th or 5th Year, and help is provided to pupils to aid them in developing relevant contacts.
In advance of the Sixth Form, pupils interested in applying to Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science related courses have an opportunity to work closely with subject specialists in the 5th Year. The school also co-hosts an annual talk from Oxford and Cambridge staff, at which interested 5th Year pupils and parents can join Lower Sixth students and parents to hear about what studying at these universities entails.
